Captain Nathaniel S. Wheeler papers, circa 1866-1868.

This collection of letters and printed documents relates to Captain Nathaniel S. Wheeler's command of Company "G" of the 125th U.S. Colored Troops (a.k.a. Buffalo Soldiers) in New Mexico and Texas, circa 1866-1868. Included are original letters addressed to Wheeler at Fort Selden and Fort Craig, New Mexico, and Fort Bliss, Texas, as well as several printed forms, manuscript orders and receipts, etc. One of Wheeler's letters includes a vivid description of passage north to Colorado. Many of the letters are addressed to Wheeler's wife Nellie in Enfield, New Hampshire, to whom he often describes troop movements, "Indian hunting," and other details of life in the western frontier forts. The correspondence is enhanced with an assortment of printed and manuscript military orders, receipts, ordinance return forms, expenditure reports and large charts recording the distribution of clothing and equipment to the soldiers.
